Humidifiers have many benefits during Colorado’s winter months. Besides reducing those pesky occurrences of shocking a loved one after walking across the carpet in your socks, a properly humidified space can decrease eye and nose irritation, reduce the risk of respiratory illness, and reduce the amount of hand lotion you use on dry skin. But did you know humidifiers are also crucial in protecting your investment in your home during the winter? Colorado winters are dry and cold and your wood floors, furniture, and cabinetry are at risk without the proper care & preservation they deserve.
As temperatures drop, we are all cranking up the furnace, which immediately drops the humidity level in our homes. Low humidity will pull moisture out of wood products, causing shrinkage, warping, cracking and breaking. Imagine swimming off the Florida coast and then being dropped into the middle of the Sahara with no towel or water – you’d not only be dry in minutes, but you’d be dehydrated within a couple hours. It’s this lack of moisture that can cause wood flooring to creek or show gaps, make your doors difficult to open, and cause your furniture to come apart in the arms and legs. Properly cared for wood floors, furniture and cabinetry last longest when the humidity is a constant. Repairs can be costly or even impossible if your wood is damaged due to dry cold air. Many manufacturers of cabinetry and other wood products recommend a humidity level around 35% and some require the humidity level to remain within a specified range (e.g. 25%-52%) to be eligible for any warranty claims.
Many homeowners have invested tens of thousands of dollars into just their wood flooring and cabinetry. Investing in a humidifier can not only provide a better living environment and health benefits for your family, but also protect your home. There are many different types of humidifiers on the market and having a licensed professional assess the best type for your home as well as preventing against any leaks is highly recommended. Our designers are more than happy to assist you in selecting a humidifier during your remodel design.
